Time & Name Management
Your time as a teacher is valuable. Here are some tips I have learned to help manage time and be more effective in your time management.
1st Be prepared. Know what you are going to do first before any students walk into the room.
2nd Have a structure you follow. A common structure used includes the following: Greet, bell ringer, roll (during bell ringer), announcements, lesson by teacher, group or individual work, wrap up, and exit ticket.
Some think that your lesson should be like opening a present. You open it up, present it, enjoy it with others, and wrap it back up nicely. It is up to you how you do this.
It may look something like this: the teacher greets the students at the door or as they enter, a bell ringer is ready for students to immediately start working on, and directions are written out clearly on the board, or a projector, for what is expected. Redirect students as needed. When class begins, get students' attention and provide specific instructions to students about what they are expected to do and when. Set a timer students can actually see. Review using formative assessments after time ends. Start your instruction, teach your lesson, follow up on students' understanding as you go, ask high quality questions and adapt your questions as needed to your audience. Do the I DO, WE DO, YOU DO Model, wrap up your lesson, and have students provide a final assessment such as an exit ticket, formal test, or presentation to show they understood what they learned.
3rd Think specifically about what students will do with their work time.
Give them a time limit for a specific task and as soon as you start that time, DO NOT INTERRUPT THEIR WORK TIME. They need to do something like stand behind their chair when they are done so they can signal to you that they have completed their work.
